Njegos Mausoleum

Here lies Njegoš, a poet and Prince of Montenegro. Most remembered for uniting the Serb people and having a major influence on what would soon become Yugoslavia.

The impressive marble sculpture at the entrance of the mausoleum was sculpted by the famous Croatian sculpture Ivan Meštrovic, who also sculpted the statue that lies at the entrance to Diocletian’s Palace in Split.

The drive up to the Mausoleum is unforgettable. We have a friend in her late 90’s who drove the road in her twenties, when Montenegro was still part of Yugoslavia, and she remembers the drive in vivid detail to this day. The road provides amazing views of the valley and bay of Kotor, but it is very narrow and comes dangerously close to the edge at times. Use extreme caution and awareness when driving on this road.

Entrance is 5 euro plus 2 euro to use the road up to where you can park. There is a restaurant and gift shop below that offers a wonderful ambiance and great views. From the restaurant the walk to the top takes about 15 minutes. At the top you can enjoy spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding area. Great for selfies and meditation.
